There is nothing odd about reading the LiveJournals of people I've never met.

That's part of the idea, right? That's why the interests, and being able to see other people's lists of friends.

And having a sick fascination with the personal thoughts and lives of people I know only online, who don't know me even that well, is not really any different than reading People Magazine.

Right?

Right.
That's actually how I first learned about LJ. I read a comic called Shaw Island, and it's creator, zachstroum, has a live journal. So I started reading it, then I started reading his friends page. One of his friends actually friended me back after I got a live journal, so now if I'm ever in Seattle I know someone. :)
