My cell phone stopped working on Saturday night, without any warning. It was a three-year-old phone, so it's not unreasonable, but I was irked. Or, as my mother would say, Put Out.

Yesterday I went to my local Cingular store to see what if anything they could do for me. I am an AT&T legacy customer, with a non-GSM plan at a base price of $29.99. These things don't exist anymore. The very helpful salesman told me that, as I expected, they cannot sell me a phone that works with my current plan. Cingular does have a $29.99 plan, although they don't advertise it, but it's not even close to comparable to what I have now. In fact, for my usage pattern, their $39.99 plan wouldn't be an improvement. He suggested that if I really want to stay with my current plan, I could buy a compatible phone on Ebay and get it activated, but if I want a new phone, it sounds like it would be better for me to switch to Verizon.

I repeat: the Cingular rep told me that I should switch to Verizon. I love customer service people who help customers find what's best for them, instead of pushing their own company.

Ginny has a fairly new Verizon phone, so I asked her to stop by my apartment after work to see how the signal is. As long as it's decent, I suppose I will find a Verizon store later this week. The Verizon website says that there is no charge for bringing my number with me, which is a Good Thing.

I also finally found something to wear to ourika's wedding. This has been an ongoing search for me, since I wanted something that 1) fit; 2) was interesting; 3) I might be willing to wear again; and 4) was affordable. I'm very pleased with what I ended up with.

The rest goes on pretty much as usual.

My data is a little old, but I have used by Verizon phone in your apartment with great success. Verizon has made us fairly happy over the last 5-ish years.

After the experiment, Ginny's phone is at least no worse than my old one, and seems to work farther into the apartment. So, tomorrow night's adventure will be a trip to the Verizon store.

So you're definitely not looking to continue your current plan?

Yay on something to wear. We're not having a clothing optional wedding ;-)

I thought about continuing the current one, but there's no guarantee that any phone I could get off Ebay would continue working for several years. Most of the phones that use the old network are probably almost as old as mine, and there's very little support to anyone who hasn't switched over to GSM. I had actually already been comparison shopping over the last several weeks. I'm annoyed by the timing, because if I'd had any warning that the other one was going to fail, I would have tried to get a new one set up first, but that's life. I may have lost a few phone numbers, but anything I would use is replaceable.

And I would have worn something - but now I have something new and nifty and (I hope) event-appropriate.

You wouldn't have come nekkid to my wedding?

*pouts* Nobody ever streaks around me!!!! Except Sophie, but that doesn't count cuz she refuses to dress like a lady.

Almost everyone I asked for outfit help suggested that I go naked. Including my mom.

Who are you to ignore everyone?

I would advise against Cingular as a legacy customer myself..they gave me absolutely no incentive to switch to one of their plans..so I didn't.

I've been pretty happy with T-Mobile, but I have less luck with them when I'm in NJ, specifically downtown Madison. (just in case you're considering them)

I sure won't switch to cingular when ours is over.

yes -- i totally had the same thing happen with Cingular a couple years ago. they checked service up in Maine where I like to hang out for long weekends, they didn't have service there yet, so they told me I was not the right phone service for them. I was SO impressed. And it was so not what I would expect even in terms of all the criticism I've heard of cingular's customer service. I'm really glad to hear it wasn't just a fluke thing, that they really do stuff like that. I had Verizon at the time. But when I found myself stuck on 91 in western mass with absolutely zero signal on the verizon...and then it started losing it's signal in my house...and on major streets here in the city...well...goodbye verizon. and now cingular has the same horrible service up in the cellphone vaccuum that is southern maine as everyone else, so i have them. and i like it. and it works for me. i'm sorry the plan won't work for you, cuz i am very pleased with them. and i like the idea of rollover. :-)
