Yes, actually. Why don't you work for the Park Service? blackfog ran a search and it looks like they've got interesting jobs, for reasonable salaries, possibly even in your area. If you did want to change location, they'd be an ideal employer, since they're everywhere. Given your qualifications, I'm sure they'd be thrilled to have you. And you're already a ranger groupie ;-) and could most likely get personal recommendations.

The sergeant at the park just asked if he could make me an official volunteer. So yah. I'm now going to be a parkie, albeit an unpaid one.

I need to ask blackfog for that search he ran...most of what i find is seasonal employment. And I know Kris ran into the same problem...he's now, unless he got a job other than the ones he told me he was hoping for earlier this year, going to be a ranger in the state park system of new mexico. My former co-worker here is trying to get into the oregon or washington state system...or national parks in that area. She has spent a large part of her career bouncing from park to park because it isn't the most stable work.

When I was in high school I wanted to be a park ranger. That was when I was still planning to go into the environmental studies/wildlife resource management field. So I ended up in cultural resource education instead. ;-)

From what I recall, there were a couple of museum or education jobs. I suppose it might be the same as what you're doing now, but it looked like they were actually through the Park Service.

It just seemed to us like a much better direction for you than the private schools you were looking at.

Some of those private schools I was applying to were really quite cool. I still think I'd like to get into one of those. Sadly, however, the only one that ahs expressed interest in ME was the one that required teachers to work 6 days a week, from 7am to 5pm in the classroom, and with an extra month of schooling over the summer, for those same hours and days. Uh. No. I'm not that dedicated to ANY work. (besides, if you're in the classroom 9-10 hours per day, six days per week, when do you grade papers and all the other out of classroom work teachers have to do??)

I checked the nps site, just out of curiosity. Insane numbers of those jobs are only available for people already in the system or meeting some other form of eligibility. heck, if army boy ever wants to leave the army and do national park protection, he's "eligible" for some of those jobs just because of the military thing. Me...I can't even figure out what the eligibility requirements are, but know I don't meet most of 'em. NPS is famously tough to get into...the salaries are better than i would have guessed tho...who knew?
