There's a woman in my apartment complex who keeps almost the same work schedule I do. I've never spoken to her, but are often coming or going at the same time. I suppose I should say hello, but she always looks as tired as I feel.

One of the little irrational vexations in life is the parking at the complex. In my heart of hearts, I think I really want assigned spaces - because I want to be able to park in the evenings, and find my car in the mornings, without having to think about it. I don't think I'm trying for particularly desirable spots - so how come people keep taking them?

Also irrationally vexing is my cell phone's battery life - currently about 6.5 days of standby. That's actually a long time, as those batteries go, so I really shouldn't complain. My problem is remembering. If it ran out every few days, I'd check it often. If it lasted a full 7 days, I could just recharge on the same day every week. Instead, once a week (currently Wednesdays), I curse in frustration at about 9:30 when it starts to beep. It finally runs out of power somewhere between 3 and 10, depending on where I've been. If it's early, I have to remember it when I get home.

It's amazing to me how much the school year affects the flow of business here. The direct impact used to be the children of the employees going back to school, but now it's Michael teaching a legal writing class one day a week. The indirect impact, though, is harder to isolate. As best I can tell, everyone is more laid back for the summer, and after Labor Day they want to jump back into whatever they were neglecting. Whatever the cause, I know that characteristically it gets very busy here just as the workload starts to lighten for my friends in academia.

It's been gorgeous out today, just a hint of fall. I've already noticed leaves starting to change in a few places around town.

As of last night, johnstevensaul was marginally better. I'm hoping he'll be better than that by the time I get home tonight. I've been very worried about him. At least we haven't had to go back to the emergency room.
