We got into the personality game (which character is the closest match to person X we both know) a little. I asked him where he thought I would fit, and was somewhat surprised by the answer - it's always interesting to see how someone else sees you. His answer was that he sees me as a combination of Wash (the pilot) and Zoe (the first mate). He says I have Wash's tendency to laugh in the face of danger, and to try to break the tension. Also, I have a little of the "I could be doing that. Yep. But it's safe here." And from both of them, the willingness to buckle down and just get the job done no matter what the personal cost.
I found that rather flattering. Myself, I fear that the Doctor is who I am - formal and pompous (polite words for a stick up the ass), and obsessively focused to the point of missing the forest for all the trees. The Shepherd is what I hope to become. And I wish I could be Inara, but I am sensible enough to realize that I do not possess the innate grace.
Of course, I identify with each of the characters somewhat. I think that's a large part of why I like the show. They are believable, real, and so the world around them becomes similarly real.
